SketchBlog Assignment #18: (due midnight, Thursday, May 3)

Title Post: “Reflections on SketchBlogging”

Having kept a blog for the last 15 weeks, discuss your overall experience. (Avoid “yes/no” answers – make complete statements).

  1. Have you ever kept a personal sketchbook or a sketchbook for a class? What was your experience like?
  2. What were your initial thoughts about blogging (in general)?
  3. What did you find hard about the blogging process?
  4. What did you enjoy most about the blogging process?
  5. Was creating a sketch-blog better or worse than creating a physical sketch-book?
  6. Was the pace of the assignment schedule okay? (1-2 per week, due on each Sunday). Did this work for you or would you have preferred some other format?
  7. Did you feel comfortable with the technological requirements of each assignment (scanning, photographing your work, editing photos, etc.)? What would you benefit from when it comes to fulfilling these objectives?
  8. Now that you’ve worked on a sketch-blog for a semester, how do you feel about the process? Did you like it? Hate it?
  9. Will you continue to keep a personal sketch-blog? (This one or even starting a new one). If you will continue to keep a sketch-blog, what do you forsee including?
  10. What are some constructive suggestions for furture use of the sketch-blog format in a classroom setting?

Don’t be afraid to be to be honest – negative responces will NOT effect your grades, just be tactful and constructive like in critique. Don’t just say “I didn’t like this” – say WHY you didn’t like it AND what you think could have been done to improve things.

SketchBlog Assignment #17due by midnight, Tuesday, May 1

Title Post: “Final Project: Revisions and Progress” (If you break this into the two posts make sure you put a “part 1/part 2″ in parentheses at the end. You will have credit deducted if you don’t have both components by the deadline!)

Part 1:

  • Discuss your final project idea – scan in your final preliminary drawing from your proposal packet.
  • IF you significantly changed your idea from the final idea on your proposal (even if it’s not “changed” so much as “evolved”) you should scan in your NEW 5 thumbnails AND a NEW preliminary drawing.
  • Discuss your final idea (the one you are actually going to use for your final) – INCLUDE your relative size and media too.

Part 2:

  • Post a progress shot (at least 40% done!) of your work.
  • Discuss any issues that you may have had up to this point, what things you’re currently working on, and what you are going to do to finish the work.

SketchBlog Assignment #16

Title Post: “Cultivating Creativity”

In reference to the two videos shown in class on Tuesday, April 17, please answer the following questions about your own creative process.

  1. How do you typically come up with ideas? Be specific. You may find that giving an example of this regarding a specific project or task is helpful – please do not use the final project from this course as an example.
  2. Does your process seem more like Johnson or Cleese’s theory of cultivating creativity? How so? If it doesn’t, which of these two ways of looking at creativity feels more familiar to you and why? (You should specifically reference – and possibly link – to the two individual videos as well as the authors when discussing this point.)
  3. Re-evaluate your final project idea – try thinking about it right before bed and see what your unconscious mind works out while you’re sleeping (like Cleese suggests) and/or gather some of your peers or friends together and discuss your idea and see if the conversation and idea exchange helps stimulate further ways of developing your concept (like Johnson suggests). Are there things that could be improved about your final project idea? What are they? (Yes, you can make these changes!)

SketchBlog Assignment #15: (due Sunday night, midnight – don’t forget to submit your bibliography and outline for your living artist presentation through the D2L dropbox by midnight too!)

Title your post: “Gestalt Corpse”

Include the following in your post: (BONUS POINTS AVAILABLE)

  1. A scan/photo of the composition you created using Gestalt principles in class Tuesday. You are not required to add color but – if you choose to do so, think critically about how you use color to further unify the whole – you will earn up to 5 Bonus points (toward your project grade) depending on how well you use color. It would be beneficial to post a before and after (black/white –> color) but this is not required to obtain bonus points.
  2. An analysis of how each person in your group attempted to bring together the composition as a whole rather than a collection of parts AND how you view the resulting product – were your classmates successful in resolving what you began? How did you resolve things further through color (if you choose to do the Bonus assignment)?
  3. A brief analysis of how using (one or more) Gestalt Principles might have helped you create a more effective composition for Project 1 OR Project 3 – you should repost an image of the project you’re referring to as a reference. Be specific in your analysis – correctly apply the principles AND explain why they would have resolved specific issues.

The Foundations Open House, held throughout our department on March 23rd, will hopefully be the first of many more Open House events in the years to come at ETSU. It was a great chance to showcase some of the excellent foundations work being created in our 2d, 3d, Color Theory, and Drawing Fundamentals courses.

In addition to lots of student work being put up on display there was also a dance booth (contributing to a larger video project being created by one of Chase Westfall’s classes), an “off-color” banquet (courtesy of two of the Color Theory classes), an inflatable sculpture by the 3D classes, artists talks by several of our current graduate students, and a portfolio review for interested prospective high school students.

Everyone (students and faculty) seemed to have a great time and despite the rain, we had an awesome turnout.

3D projects in the Campus Center.

Inflatable project from the 3D classes.

"Off Color" banquet by Color Theory students featuring some very questionably colored food items. The back wall contains works from Intro Painting classes.

The 2D room, featuring work from my 2 classes recent 2D project "More Than Meets the Eye."

SketchBlog Assignment #14: (Due Sunday, April 8, midnight – BOTH classes)

NOTE: Each class has a different assignment #12 for the blog this week – the following assignment is only for the TR 11-2pm class. To see the assignment for the other class, please refer to the previous post.

SketchBlog Assignment # 12: (TR 11-2 class) Due Sunday, March 25th, midnight

  • Title you post: “Preliminary Work for In Dreams”
  • Include in your post the following: 1.) scans of a minimum number of 2 of your 5 media experiments sheet 2.) scan of your 25% scale color preliminary sketch using color (the 7×9 piece of Bristol) 3.) and explanation of how you intend to tie your media experimentation into the execution of your actual work on panel (i.e. what your rough plan is)

The following assignments are ONLY for the night class (5-8pm).

SketchBlog Assignment #11: (POST BY: Sunday, March 18th, midnight)

NOTE: The 4th technique and materials to create the technique should be brought with you to class on Thursday, March 15th (we will work with them IN class to create your 5×7 studies).

  • Title your post: “Mixed-Media/Collage Techniques”
  • In class you will be given a demonstration on three different mixed-media/collage techniques.
  • For your blog post you will do some research and come up with an additional fourth technique. You will create a 5×7 study using this technique in addition to the others as instructed in class.
  • You will scan all 4 studies and include them in your post along with a short paragraph discussing what worked, what you liked (and didn’t like), etc.

SketchBlog Assignment #12 (POST BY: Wednesday, March 21, midnight)

  • Title your post: “Mixed-Media/Collage Artists”
  • Research various artists who work with collage. Include the following in your post: 1.) Artist’s name 2.) examples of their collage work 3.) discussion about how they manipulate media, why they choose to use the media that they use, and how you react/relate to their work using vocabulary from our lectures to better express your thoughts.
  • You will be expected to refer to these artists in the discussion of your project idea in class on Thursday, March 22.

While there were too many good pieces to post them all on the blog, I wanted to showcase a few works which meet the objectives of the project exceptionally well.

For non-students stumbling across this post: “More Than Meets The Eye” was a project designed around the concept of tromp l’oeil. Each student was asked to pick an object, photograph that object using a singular light source (chiaroscuro), and then convert their color still life photo to black and white. This black and white image was then used as a reference so that the object and background could be physically painted using only black and white acrylic paint. The object was then re-photographed in the same perspective as the reference photo in color using no specific light source in as non-reflective an environment as possible.

The photographs below are unaltered aside from cropping. All shadows were hand painted both on objects and in background.
